Position Overview
The Senior Estimator plays a key leadership role within our Preconstruction team, responsible for delivering complete, accurate, and competitive estimates for both hard bid and negotiated construction projects.
This position leads the estimating process from initial document review through proposal submission, while also mentoring and supporting the development of Estimators and Junior Estimators. Working closely with the Director of Preconstruction, the Senior Estimator contributes to project strategy, risk analysis, and client relationships.
The ideal candidate is both technically strong and collaborative, able to manage multiple estimates while supporting the continued growth of the estimating team.
Key Responsibilities
Preconstruction & Estimating
- Perform all core Estimator responsibilities at an advanced level
- Lead and manage the full estimating process including subcontractor solicitation, scope review and leveling, proposal analysis, cost evaluation and final estimate development
- Prepare accurate estimates for competitive bid and negotiated projects
- Identify and communicate project risks, assumptions, and opportunities
- Manage multiple project estimates simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and deadlines
- Develop and maintain relationships with owners, architects, subcontractors, and vendors
- Lead value engineering discussions and cost-saving strategies
- Perform constructability and feasibility reviews
- Evaluate subcontractor capabilities, qualifications, and bid completeness
- Participate in project handoff meetings with operations teams
- Conduct post-bid reviews and cost analysis
- Mentor and support the professional development of Estimators and Junior Estimators
- Support business development efforts and client presentations when needed
- Maintain proficiency with estimating software, databases, and procedures
Finance & Risk Management
- Analyze financial risk and opportunity within project estimates
- Support the development of risk mitigation strategies
- Maintain understanding of contractual obligations related to cost exposure
- Review and evaluate project insurance requirements and cost implications
Qualifications
- 2–4 year degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
- 5+ years of commercial construction estimating experience
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and subcontractor markets
- Experience preparing estimates for both hard bid and negotiated work
- Ability to lead multiple estimates simultaneously
- Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills
- High level of organization and attention to detail
Compensation & Benefits
Estimated Base Salary
$100,000 – $140,000 per year
Actual compensation is based on the fair market value of the role in the geographic area and the candidate’s experience and qualifications. This range represents a good-faith estimate, and Maxwell Builders reserves the right to adjust compensation based on candidate qualifications.
